Built during the reign of King Henry VIII, Walmer Castle is one of the most fascinating visitor attractions in the South East.

Originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery defences,  it became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports due to it's key position on the Kent coast

As the home of the Lord Warden, Walmer has been home to an incredible range of characters. The Duke of Wellington held the post for 23 years; see the armchair in which Wellington died and an original pair of Wellington boots!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother also made regular visits to Walmer Castle. Visitors can stroll in her dedicated garden filled with colours and scents.

Roam an array of stunning formal gardens and grand herbaceous borders before discovering the newly-restored woodland walk and sunken glen garden. There’s also a new play trail to entertain little adventures with wobbly bridges to cross and giant nets to climb.

After a day of exploring make sure to relax at the new Glasshouse Café or enjoy a seasonal menu featuring fresh produce grown in the kitchen garden at the Lord Warden’s tea room.
